On 21st November, the Madonna della Salute is celebrated in Venice. It is still the city's most cherished Catholic festivity. It originated in the 17th century, way back in 1630 when a terrible plague broke out in Venice that quickly wiped out more than a quarter of the population.Faced with such a catastrophe, the Venetians appealed to the Virgin Mary's intercession and the Doge made a solemn vow to erect a Basilica dedicated to the Virgin Mary if the city fought off the disease. The plague ended in 1631 and the foundation stone of the majestic church was laid.Since then, on the 21st of November, the day of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, has been a great feast in Venice, combining devotion and tradition.From the first light of dawn, Venetians make a pilgrimage to the magnificent Baroque church, cross the "Ponte votivo" (votive bridge) over the Grand Canal, and arrive at the church where they light a candle and pray.
